Shagun has been awarded one of the TOP five "Craftpeople of India" in the Luxury Fortune magazine edition for her influence on wines in India and was recently selected as one of the 50 most Powerful Women in the luxury by LuxeBook magazine. She is one of the most recognized chefs and sommeliers in India - quite an achievement for a country with more than one million inhabitants and where being a woman is still a disadvantage.
She is fifth generation born into a family of hoteliers in the state of Gujarat, an area with a rich culinary tradition of incredible vegetarian cooking and soul stirring flavours.
For Shagun Mehra cooking is an art that she has enjoyed since her childhood, her passion for different flavors and for all that her country has to offer has led her to explore different territories in India to discover the ancient recipes that are transferred from generation to generation.
She specializes in a plant based, pescatarian diet with different aromas and spices, using seasonal products from local communities.
She curates acomplete culinary experience from the kitchen to the table.
The knowledge she acquired in India has merged with her studies in Europe in prestigious institutions such as Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Ecole de Roches in Switzerland and the Basque Culinary Center in Spain. She believes that the west has allowed her to value the cuisine of her country and defend the role of the Indian woman in the professional kitchen, since women play this role only in her homes.
Mehra has cooked with prestigious Chefs from around the world such as Theo Randall in London, Xavier Pellicer, Rafa Peña in Barcelona and Chef María José, Alicante. She is also one of the most Wine knowledgeable people of India.
She additionally highlights her solidarity and her strong bond with the natural and animal world. Specifically, her work in defense of elephants, one of the most representative animals of India. She founded Ear to the Wild Foundation, an NGO that seeks to save this wonderful animal from train collisions - one of the most frequent causes of death of these mammals in her country.
Shagun is currently working on empowering and encouraging ‘Women in Gastronomy’ while creating a series of ‘Dishes from Elephant Lands’ - to promote the communities that live around wild elephants in India.
